Thyrotrophs produce thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). TSH is a 28 kDglycoprotein that contains 201 amino acid residues and is composed ofalpha and beta subunits. The alpha subunit (MW 13kD) isimmunologically similar to the alpha subunit of the other anterior pituitaryhormones. The beta sub-unit is unique to TSH and is responsible for thespecific biological activity of TSH. To identify thyrotrophs without crossreactivity with gonadotrophs, antibodies directed to the TSH beta subunitmust be used.
