Vitamin K1 (Phylloquinone) is a naturally occurring vitamin essential for blood coagulation and bone and vascular metabolism. It is a prenylated naphthoquinone synthesized by plants, green algae, and some cyanobacteria, where it acts as an electron carrier in photosystem I and an electron acceptor for protein disulfide bond formation. In humans, it functions as Vitamin K1. Dietary sources include green leafy vegetables and vegetable oil. Vitamin K1 can also exhibit antiproliferative effects and induce apoptosis in colon cancer cell lines, involving the MAPK pathway and a decrease in polyamine biosynthesis.
