Life Science Buffers
Balanced salt solutions and powders used for molecular, protein, nucleic acid, and cell biology applications including cell culture, electrophoresis, ELISA, and chromatography processes; available in a variety of formulations and grades.
Buffer solutions serve to keep pH (acidity or alkalinity) nearly constant in a variety of chemical and biological applications. For example, a bicarbonate buffer helps maintain the pH of blood, a buffered saline maintains cellular contents at a consistent pH level, and buffers help maintain a narrow pH range for enzymes to function correctly.
Most biological samples used in research are kept at a pH of about 7.4. Common biological buffers used for tissue culture include Dulbeccos phosphate buffered saline (PBS), Tris base, HEPES, MOPS, PIPES, and other formulations developed for specific cell lines or applications. Most buffers used in cell culture are also DNase-, RNase-, and protease-free.
The choice of buffer for a particular biological reaction or site depends on several factors:
- Temperature
- Desired or target pH
- Buffer toxicity (to the system)
- Buffer interactions with other system components

Applications: TBS (10X), pH 7.4 will be useful as a washing buffer for electrodes, microtiter plates, and alkaline phophatase or peroxidase conjugates. TBS (10X), pH 7.44 can also be used in detergent preparation and Western blot or ELISA applications.

Tris is a buffer component in molecular biology, tissue culture, and electrophoresis procedures. These solutions of Tris Hydrochloride provide convenient and highly purified solutions. Applications: Tris solutions are formulated into working concentrations for preparing the stacking and resolving portions of native or SDS-PAGE gels using discontinuous buffer systems according to Laemmli (1970) or Ornstein and Davis (1959).
Use Use Tris-HCl (1M), pH 7.0-7.5 for DEAE Dextran-mediated transfection of non-adherent and adherent cells.

Quality Biological Inc TAE Buffer (50X), Case 10 X 1000 mL
TAE (Tris-Acetate EDTA Buffer) buffer provides faster electrophoretic migration of linear DNA and better resolution of supercoiled DNA. TAE Buffer may be more suitable than TBE, for electrophoresis if DNA is to be recovered from the agarose and purified using commercially available DNA purification kits.
Applications: TAE buffer has a relatively low buffering capacity, therefore, periodic replacement of the buffer during prolonged electrophoresis is recommended.
