This specificity makes it particularly useful in biological systems where calcium plays an important role, as well as for the determination of calcium in the presence of magnesium, since EGTA has greater specificity for calcium ions.

EGTA is a chelating agent that can be used for the determination of calcium in the presence of magnesium since EGTA has greater specificity for calcium ions. EGTA has also been shown to activate Ca2+-stimulated ATPase in rat liver plasma membranes and induce apoptosis in PC12 cells.
