High quality graphene chemical vapor deposition graphene is layered on a silicon nitride TEM substrate. The substrate is 200 um thick 3.0mm hexagonal silicon with a 0.5 x 0.5 mm aperture and 200 nm thick silicon nitride membrane with approximately 6,400 2.5 um holes. Graphene coverage of the TEM grid is better than 75 percent.
The substrate is a solid hexagonal disk with a greenish hue. The graphene film appears as a near-transparent to light-grey film on the surface of the microporous Silicon Nitride membrane.

This process is called intercalation and the result is an expandable graphite salt or a graphite intercalation compound (GIC.) The material gets its name because, when exposed to heat, the intercalated graphite layers expand and separate like an accordion. The final expanded volume can be hundreds of times greater than the initial volume of the material. The intercalation agent and the proportion of intercalated layers determine the temperature at which expansion begins and the rate at which expansion occurs.
