Phosphonoacetic acid is an endogenous metabolite and an antiviral agent. It exhibits activity against orthopoxviruses and herpes viruses. It can inhibit HSV DNA synthesis and virus-specific DNA polymerase activity, also affecting the synthesis of late viral proteins.
