Sulfathiazole is an orally active, organosulfur compound functioning as a short-acting sulfonamide antibiotic and an endocrine disruptor. It targets the steroidogenic pathway, enhancing CYP19 activity in human adrenal cells (H295R) and upregulating mRNA expression of CYP17, CYP19, and 3β-HSD. It also increases 17-estradiol (E2) production and exhibits endocrine-disrupting effects on aquatic organisms like the Japanese medaka fish.
