However, it forms heterodimers with other EGFR family members with kinase activity, activating pathways that lead to cell proliferation or differentiation. Gene amplification or overexpression of this protein has been observed in cancers like prostate, bladder, and breast tumors. Alternate splice variants have been characterized, including one isoform that lacks the intermembrane region and is secreted outside the cell, where it modulates the activity of the membrane-bound form. Other splice variants have been reported but are not fully characterized.
