Distillation is a process used widely in the laboratory or in wider working environments for separating or purifying liquids or liquid mixtures based on the different boiling points of individual components.
Distillation Applications:
• Separation and purification of miscible liquid mixtures in organic chemistry
• Drying of solid residues and/or solvent removal
• Fractional distillation of liquids from polymers and petroleum products
• Removal of particulates or other solid contaminants
• As part of a water purification system for production of distilled water for laboratory use
• Specialist steam distillation-based applications such as Kjeldahl analysis of nitrogen and proteins in food, beverage, or environmental samples
What Types of Distillation Equipment Are Available?
Conventional distillation apparatus, typically comprising individual, jointed borosilicate glassware components assembled by the user (depending upon the application), using appropriate clamps, stands, and supports. Most conventional distillation assemblies combine a round-bottomed distilling flask to contain and heat the liquid(s) that require purification, fitted with a stoppered or jointed neck to which is attached a downward-sloping, inclined side-arm for connection to a condensing unit to cool the heated vapors back down to their liquid state. Heating mantles are the preferred heat source for improved temperature control. These conventional distillation units are also available supplied complete and ready-assembled for added convenience and ease of use.
Specialized automated distillation equipment, notably units designed for the determination of volatile acidity and alcoholic strength by volume in wines, musts, and alcoholic beverages, and units designed for Kjeldahl nitrogen or protein determinations.

Distilling Head, Short Path, 14/20 Thermometer Joint, 24/40 Lower Inner Joint, Approx. 195mm Width x 150mm Height. Designed for use with small quantities where hold up between the flask and receiver must be kept to a minimum. The thermometer bulb and stem serve as column packing. Upper hose connections are for cooling lines while the lower connection is for vacuum. Available with Vigreux indentations to improve efficiency. NOTE: The 14/20 size accepts a 1” immersion 7/12 or 10/18 thermometer, while the 24/40 and 29/42 sizes accepts a 2” immersion, 10/30 thermometer.

The top outer joint on the 14/20 size can be converted to a 10/18 thermometer joint by using a CG-1016-27 bushing adapter. The sidearm is sealed at a height for use with a 1” immersion thermometer. The inner drip tip joint on the condenser and inner joint on the uptake tube are the same size.

10mm O.D. polished glass stirring shaft; bead type. Length: 69cm. Use with only ACE PTFE stirrer bearings. Shafts accept 316 SS multi-paddle or turbine agitators secured with set-screw on ground flat section.

Column length refers to the effective length, measured from the lowest to highest indent in the column. Column has a top outer and lower inner standard taper joint.

Condenser, Reflux, 390mm, 24/40 Joint, 250mm Jacket Length. Reflux condenser having an internal coil that is water jacketed. Vapors are condensed both on the coil and the inner wall of the jacket. The top end has a standard taper outer joint and the lower end has an inner drip tip joint. Hose connections have an O.D. of 10mm at the middle serration.

Similar to CG-1261 but with the uptake tube vacuum jacketed to improve distillation performance. The jacket eliminates the possibility of condensation or recrystallization of distillate in the sidearm. The 5ml has subdivisions of 0.20ml; 10ml has subdivisions of 0.1ml; the 20ml has subdivisions of 0.2 from 0 to 3ml and 0.5 from 3 to 20mL. Available with glass or PTFE stopcocks.
