Perfringens Agar Base (TSC) is used with selective and differential supplements for the recovery of Clostridium perfringens, and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Formulated according to ISO 14189:2013, Perfringens Agar Base (TSC) is a nutritious base medium used in the preparation of SFP Agar and TSC Agar. Depending upon the formula, supplements are added to increase the selectivity of the medium. Shahidi-Ferguson Perfringens (SFP) Agar is based on the formula by Shahidi and Ferguson and incorporates the supplements, Polymyxin B Sulfate and Kanamycin. Tryptose Sulphite Cycloserine (TSC) Agar is developed with the same base as SFP Agar, with the addition of Cycloserine. Brain Heart Infusion Agar is used for the cultivation of a wide variety of fastidious organisms and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.A general purpose nutritious agar base. This medium was first used for the isolation of dental pathogens. With the addition of 7% defibrinated blood the medium will support the growth of a wide range of fastidious organisms, the phosphate buffer will help neutralize the acids produced from the utilization of glucose and thus maintain viability. The medium is not recommended for the determination of hemolytic reactions because of the glucose content.

Enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) are recognized as the primary cause of hemorrhagic colitis (HC) or bloody diarrhea. This infection can also lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). The presence of a low level of peptone lessens the physiological shock normally experienced by bacterial cells when they are introduced to a diluent such as Ringer’s Solution. The level of peptone is such that multiplication of the organisms is not possible in the time in which the sample will be present in the diluent (1-2 hours). Some plasmid vectors replicate to high copy numbers without selective amplification. Some vectors do not replicate so freely and need to be selectively amplified. Chloramphenicol can be added to inhibit host synthesis and prevent replication of the bacterial chromosome.
