Dichloran Glycerol (DG-18) Agar Base is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Dichloran Glycerol (DG-18) Agar Base is used for the enumeration of viable osmophilic yeasts and xerophilic molds in food or animal feed products with a water activity of less than or equal to 0.95. This includes such foods as dry fruits, jams, cakes, dried meat, salted fish, grains, cereals, flours, nuts, spices, condiments and some animal feeds. This medium is not suitable for the examination of dehydrated products with a water activity of greater than 0.95, Dichloran Rose Bengal Chloramphenicol Agar (NCM0082 or NCM0029) should be used. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/dichloran-glycerol-agar-base

Tetrathionate Broth Base is used with iodine for the recovery of Salmonella spp. in a laboratory setting. Tetrathionate Broth Base is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Tetrathionate Broth Base is used as a selective enrichment for the cultivation of Salmonella spp. Salmonella organisms may be injured in food-processing procedures, which include exposure to low temperatures, sub-marginal heat, drying, radiation, preservative, and sanitizers. Mueller demonstrated the effectiveness of Tetrathionate Broth for enriching typhoid and paratyphoid bacilli while inhibiting coliform organisms. Using modified Mueller’s broth, Kauffmann increased the number of positive isolates. Tetrathionate Broth was used in studies for the poultry industry and in a collaborative study for rapid screening of Salmonella in food. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/tetrathionate-broth-base

Eosin Methylene Blue Agar Levine is used for the isolation and differentiation of Gram-negative enteric bacilli and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. This medium was introduced in 1916 by Holt-Harris and Teague to differentiate Escherichia spp. and Aerobacter spp. It was modified by Levine in 1918 who removed sucrose from the formula and increased the lactose content. The distinctive metallic sheen produced by E. coli on this medium is due to acid production resulting in an amide bonding between the eosin and methylene blue, other coliforms do not produce enough acid to cause this reaction. Eosin inhibits most Gram-positive organisms. The prepared medium is sensitive to light. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/eosin-methylene-blue-agar-levine

EC Medium w/ MUG is used for the fluorogenic detection of Escherichia coli in a laboratory setting. EC Medium w/ MUG is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.EC Medium was developed by Hajna and Perry in an effort to improve the methods for the detection of the coliform group and E. coli. This medium consists of a buffered lactose broth with the addition of 0.15% Bile Salts Mixture. Growth of spore-forming bacteria is inhibited by the bile salts, while growth of E. coli is enhanced by its presence. EC Medium w/ MUG is the same formula as EC Medium, with the addition of 4-methylumbelliferyl-ß-D-glucuronide. Feng and Hartman developed a rapid assay for E. coli by incorporating 4-methylumbelliferyl-ß-D-glucuronide (MUG) into Lauryl Tryptose Broth at a final concentration of 100 ɥg/mL.For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/ec-medium-with-mug

Rappaport-Vassiliadis Salmonella Enrichment Broth is used for the enrichment and selective isolation of Salmonella spp. Conforms to Harmonized USP/EP/JP Requirements. Rappaport-Vassiliadis Salmonella Enrichment Broth is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. A medium recommended by the Harmonized Pharmacopoeia for the enrichment and selective isolation of Salmonella spp.from non-sterile samples. Malachite green and magnesium chloride act as selective agents, combined with high osmotic pressure and low pH to effectively inhibit non-target competitive organisms. Soya peptone provides a source of nitrogen and potassium phosphate acts as a buffer. Some Salmonella (S. typhi and S. enteritidis) are known to be sensitive to malachite green and as such may fail to grow. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/rappaport-vassiliadis-salmonella-enrichment-broth

Rappaport Vassiliadis R10 Broth is used for the selective enrichment of Salmonella spp. from foods in a laboratory setting. Rappaport Vassiliadis R10 Broth is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Rappaport et al formulated an enrichment medium for Salmonella spp. that was modified by Vassiliadis et al. The Rappaport formulation, designated R 25/37°C, recommended incubation at 37°C. The Vassiliadis modification, designated R 10/43°C, had a reduced level of Malachite Green and recommended incubation at 43°C. Peterz later showed that incubation at 41.5 ± 0.5°C for 24 hours improved recovery of Salmonella spp. Rappaport-Vassiliadis R10 Broth is a selective enrichment medium that is used following pre-enrichment of the specimen. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/rappaport-vassiliadis-r10-broth

A-1 Medium is used for the detection of coliform organisms in water and food in a laboratory setting. A-1 Medium is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.Since the early 1900’s enumeration of coliform organisms, specifically E. coli, have been used to determine water purity. Elevated temperature and most-probable-number (MPN) methods are routinely used for analysis of water and food samples for presence of fecal coliforms. A-1 Medium was formulated to hasten E. coli recovery and reduce the incidence of false positive cultures. In 1972 Andrews and Presnell developed A-1 Medium. This medium recovers E. coli from estuarine water in 24 hours instead of 72 hours, and in greater numbers without the pre-enrichment step. A-1 Medium can be used in a single step procedure for the detection of fecal coliforms in source water, seawater, treated wastewater, and foods. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/a-1-medium
