Oncogene sequences originally isolated from Harvey sarcoma virus v-H-ras and Kirsten sarcoma virus v-K-ras, both encode 21,000 dalton phosphoproteins (p21's) with guanine nucleotide binding activity. Human cellular homologues of v-H-ras and v-K-ras, designated c-H-ras and c-K-ras, respectively, and a related human oncogene, c-N-ras, each encode 21,000 dalton protein analogues to the gene products of their viral counterparts.
