D-Pantothenic acid (CAS 79-83-4) also known as vitamin B5 is a water-soluble vitamin essential for the biosynthesis of coenzyme A and the metabolism of fatty acids carbohydrates and proteins Mechanistically it participates in cellular energy production and biosynthetic pathways through its role as a precursor to coenzyme A In rabbit models administration of pentothenate (20 mg/kg) increased postoperative tendon and skin strength and elevated fibroblast content in wound sites supporting roles in tissue repair Pantothenic acid deficiency has been associated with a higher incidence of hypertension due to impaired adrenal regeneration In the CNS it accumulates and undergoes phosphorylation in neural tissues with its metabolism susceptible to modulation by specific inhibitors In murine models pantothenic acid reduced valproic acid-induced neural tube defects suggesting a protective effect in embryonic development studies
