It is a precursor for the preparation of endo-tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene, which reacts with aluminum chloride at higher temperature to give adamantine. It undergoes a retro-Diels-Alder reaction to yield cyclopentadiene, which acts as ligand in inorganic chemistry.
