Description

Mouse Monoclonal Antibody

MA1-82309 recognizes the gp85/gp70 envelope glycoprotein of feline leukemia virus. The antibody specifically recognizes the epitope defined by amino acids 214-218 of the gp70 sequence (aa MGPNL). Some weak cross-reactivity with the sequence MGPLL found in the FeLV p15e membrane protein may also occur. This antibody effectively neutralizes all three FeLV subgroups (A, B, and C). Removal of sodium azide is recommended prior to use in functional assays.

Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is a retrovirus that infects cats. As a retrovirus, FeLV is transmitted as an RNA virus but the RNA is reverse transcribed into DNA. Retroviruses contradict the Central dogma of molecular biology. FeLV is usually transmitted between infected cats when the transfer of saliva or nasal secretions is involved. If not defeated by the animal's immune system, the virus can be lethal. The disease caused by this virus is a form of cancer of blood cells called lymphocytes (a leukemia).
