Fumonisin B1 (CAS 116355-83-0) is a mycotoxin isolated from the fungus Fusarium moniliforme It potently inhibits sphingosine N-acyltransferase (ceramide synthase) an enzyme critical to sphingolipid biosynthesis leading to the intracellular accumulation of sphingoid bases (IC 75 nM) Additionally Fumonisin B1 exhibits inhibitory activity against several protein phosphatases notably PP5 PP2C PP2A PP1 2 and PP2B with IC ranging from approximately 80 M (PP5) to 3000 M (PP2B) This compound is employed in biomedical research to investigate sphingolipid metabolism cell signaling and phosphatase-related cellular processes
