Used to study bacterial strains and growth conditions. Hemin Chloride, MP Biomedicals is the oxidized version of heme. It is an iron-containing porphyrin, a prosthetic group for a diverse group of proteins. Free heme is pro-inflammatory and contributes to

Hemin is a Protoporphyrin IX containing a ferric iron ion (Heme B) with a chloride ligand. It is the oxidized version of heme. Free heme can be released from hemoglobin following hemolysis. Free hemin levels may be upregulated in various pathological conditions and can contribute to various inflammatory conditions including vascular disorders, renal failure, and immune-mediated disorders.

Hemin is used for studying bacterial strains and growth conditions, cell transfections, and short-term colony assays (the culture medium consists of hemin along with other components). It is used in β-hematin formation assay for analyzing the inhibitory activity of MMV (Medicines for Malaria Venture) Malaria Box compounds against the formation of β-hematin. It may also be used to study the expression, represson and activity of heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1). Hematin is the “X factor” required to grown Haemophilus influenzae.
