Hemoglobin | Purity: N/A | Mol Wt: 64,500 Da | CAS No: 9008-02-0 | MFCD00004244 | N/AHemoglobin, the iron-containing globular protein found within red blood cells, serves as the primary carrier of oxygen from the lungs to body tissues. It makes up ~35% of red blood cell content by weight and has a heterotetrameric structure composed of 4 subunits, with each subunit containing a heme group capable of reversibly binding one oxygen molecule. The most common adult form, hemoglobin A, consists of 2 alpha and 2 beta subunits. Oxygen binding induces conformational changes in hemoglobin, altering its affinity for oxygen and allowing efficient oxygen delivery from areas of high concentration in the lungs to low concentration in respiring tissues. The iron-containing heme groups also impart the characteristic red color to blood.
