Catalyzes hydrolysis of esters in aqueous solutions and synthesis of esters in non-aqueous solutions

Lipases are a subclass of esterases. They also produce hydroxyl and carboxylic groups through the hydrolysis of ester linkages in poly(ethylene terephthalate).
