Increase cell adherence with the hydrophilic surface of these coverslips. Tissue-culture treated and available in a number of shapes and sizes.

Improve cell attachment and growth on coverslips with the versatile Thermo Scientific™ Nunc™ Thermanox™ Coverslips. These cell-culture treated coverslips are available in a number of shapes and sizes. The proprietary polyester material is highly resistant to solvents (e.g. xylene, acetone, acetic acid) and has a very low gas permeability. Suitable for cytostaining, mounting, embedding, or scintillation counting. Not recommended for phase contrast microscopy or techniques involving fluorescent stains.

  • Cell culture-treated on one side for optimal cell attachment and growth. Treated side facing the packaging label
  • Resistant to commonly used solvents (xylene, acetone, acetic acid) in most staining techniques with regular mounting and embedding materials
  • Can be use with amyl acetate for EM preparations
  • Suitable for use in scintillation counting
  • Bendable with forceps, and can be cut with scissors, scalpel or microtome
  • Do not flame to sterilize
  • Do not handle with rubber gloves so as to avoid leaving toxic residues on the coverslips
  • Autofluorescent in the range of 380 nm to 545 nm, not recommended for fluorescence stainings

When I am using Nunc Thermanox Coverslips for fluorescence, at what range does it exhibit autofluorescence?

Our Nunc Thermanox Coverslips autofluoresce at the rhodamine and FITC range.
Fluorescein isothiocyanate:
- excitation = 494 nm
- emission = 517 nm

How can I determine which side, of your Nunc Thermanox Coverslips, is cell culture-treated?

A simple method, to determine which side of our Nunc Thermanox Coverslip is cell cultured-treated, is the "droplet" test. A drop of water or culture medium will spread on the hydrophilic, cell culture treated side.
Please review the following procedure for the "droplet" test:
- Put a drop of sterile media or water on the coverslip
- If the droplet forms a bead, then that side of the coverslip is not treated
- If the droplet spreads evenly over the coverslip, then that side of the coverslip is treated
Additionally, the coverslips are packaged so the cell culture-treated side faces the label.

What is Thermanox plastic?

Thermanox is a trademark name for a particular type of polymer in the polyolefin family.

How can I tell which side of your Thermanox coverslips is treated?

If Thermanox coverslips are still in the original packaging, the side facing the label is treated. If they have been removed, there is another way to determine this: hold one with forceps at a slight angle to the horizontal and dispense a few drops of sterile water onto the surface. On the untreated side the water will bead up tightly as it runs off, but on the treated side it will spread out much more due to the hydrophilic surface modification.
