Oligomycin
Description
Inhibits respiration in mitochondria. Also inhibits ATP synthase
This Thermo Scientific Chemicals brand product was originally part of the Alfa Aesar product portfolio. Some documentation and label information may refer to the legacy brand. The original Alfa Aesar product / item code or SKU reference has not changed as a part of the brand transition to Thermo Scientific Chemicals.
General Description
- Oligomycin is a macrolide produced by Streptomyces diastatochromogenes that is toxic to other organisms
- Oligomycin blocks oxidative phosphorylation through inhibition of ATP synthase. The compound binds to the proton channel of ATP synthase and blocks mitochondrial proton import, resulting in accumulation of cytoplasmic protons
- Oligomycin also inhibits Na+/K+ exchange through Na+ occlusion within the Na/K-ATPase
- Oligomycin is provided as a mixture of A, B, and C isomers
Application
- Oligomycin inhibits respiration in mitochondria. It also inhibits ATP synthase
- Oligomycin can induce apoptosis in cultured human hepatocarcinoma and other mammalian cells in laboratory settings
