Thermo Scientific™ Cefixime Rhamnose Sorbitol MacConkey Agar Base (Dehydrated)
Description
Selectively detect Escherichia coli O157 with this selective, differential medium.
Selectively detect Escherichia coli O157 with Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Cefixime Rhamnose Sorbitol MacConkey Agar Base (Dehydrated), a selective, differential medium based on Sorbitol MacConkey Agar with added rhamnose and cefixime. The addition of rhamnose to Sorbitol MacConkey Agar (SMAC) has been shown to aid the differentiation of Escherichia coli O157 from background flora.
Escherichia coli O157 is recognized as a cause of hemorrhagic colitis, an illness characterized by bloody diarrhoea and severe abdominal pain, and hemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) 1,2,3,4,5, and as such, is a significant human pathogen.
Cefixime Rhamnose Sorbitol MacConkey Agar Base provides a selective base for differentiation of Escherichia coli O157.
- Selective: the addition of Cefixime reduces the level of competing flora, particularly Proteus, that often account for large numbers of non-sorbitol fermenting colonies
- Easy-to-read: Escherichia coli O157 do not usually ferment sorbitol or rhamnose, so appear as straw-colored colonies, while the sorbitol negative Escherichia coli that ferment rhamnose appear as pink colonies.
