Isolate Clostridium difficile from fecal specimens with this medium when used with Culture Media Supplement (SR0096).

Isolate Clostridium difficile from fecal specimens with Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Clostridium Difficile Agar Base (Dehydrated) when used with Culture Media Supplement (SR0096). The combination of Clostridium Difficile Agar Base and the Culture Media Supplement (SR0096) is based on the formulation proposed by George et al.1 The selective agents D-cycloserine (500μg/ml) and cefoxitin (16μg/ml) inhibit growth of the majority of non target organisms which may be found in large numbers in fecal samples.

Clostridium difficile was first isolated in 1935 by Hall and O’Toole2 who proposed the name `difficile’ because it was very difficult to isolate. Clostridium difficile is a toxin-producing, spore forming anaerobic gram-positive rod, which causes gastrointestinal infections ranging in severity from asymptomatic colonization to severe diarrhea, pseudomembranous colitus (PMC), toxic megacolon and colonic perforaton.

Clostridium Difficile Agar Base is used for the primary isolation of C. difficile from fecal specimens. The medium composition is designed so as to obtain luxuriant growth of C. difficile.

  • Selective: the selective agents D-cycloserine (500μg/mL) and cefoxitin (16μg/mL) inhibit growth of the majority of Enterobacteriaceae, as well as Streptococcus fecalis, staphylococci, Gram-negative non-sporing anaerobic bacilli and Clostridia (except Clostridium difficile) which may be found in large numbers in fecal samples.
  • Easy-to-read: C. difficile forms grey-white colored colonies.
