Detect and isolate enterococci in foodstuffs with this selective medium.
Supplier: Thermo Scientific™ CM0591B
Description
Detect and isolate Enterococci in foodstuffs with Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Kanamycin Aesculin Azide Agar Base (Dehydrated) when used with Kanamycin Supplement (SR0092). The medium contains the selective inhibitory components kanamycin sulphate and sodium azide. It also contains an indicator system to detect the growth of aesculin-hydrolysing streptococci. These organisms produce black zones around the colonies from the formation of black iron phenolic compounds derived from aesculin-hydrolysis products and ferrous iron.
Enterococci are part of the normal intestinal flora of human and animals. They have been long recognized as important human pathogens and are becoming increasingly so. Kanamycin Esculin Azide Agar is formulated as per Mossel et al 1, 2 to detect enterococci in foodstuffs. Mossel et al3 used it for the dip slide technique for bacteriological monitoring of foods.
- Selective: due to the presence of kanamycin sulphate and sodium azide medium provides selectivity against non-target organisms.
- Easy to read: aesculin-hydrolyzing streptococci form black zones around the colonies.
- Can be used successfully for the isolation of glycopeptide resistant enterococci from foods4,5
