Selectively isolate and differentiate pathogenic staphylococci based on salt tolerance, pigmentation and mannitol fermentation with this medium.

Selectively isolate and differentiate pathogenic staphylococci based on salt tolerance, pigmentation, mannitol fermentation and gelatin liquefaction with Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Staphylococcus Medium No.110 (Dehydrated). Pathogenic staphylococci (coagulase-positive) grow on the high-salt mannitol medium to form orange colonies which give positive reactions for acid production and gelatin liquefaction.

Use Staphylococcus Medium No.110 for selective isolation and differentiation of pathogenic staphylococci (Chapman1,2) based on salt tolerance, pigmentation, mannitol fermentation, and gelatin liquefaction.

The Staphylococcus Medium No.110 is formulated according to the APHA3 and AOAC4 specifications and can be used with Egg Yolk Emulsion (5% v/v SR0047) to study the egg yolk reactions.

Stone5 suggested that the gelatinase activity in the medium was indicative of food poisoning strains but Chapman et al.6 reported that typical food poisoning staphylococci should also produce an orange pigment, be hemolytic, be coagulase-positive, and ferment mannitol. Chapman7 showed that incubation at 30°C produced deeper pigmentation and no interference with the Stone reaction or with acid production from mannitol - both latter being about as intense as at 35°C.
