Isolate, cultivate and /or carry out susceptibility testing of a wide variety of anaerobic organisms from clinical samples with this medium.

Isolate, cultivate and /or carry out susceptibility testing of a wide variety of anaerobic organisms from samples with Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Wilkins-Chalgren Anaerobe Agar (Dehydrated). Wilkins and Chalgren1, recognizing the need for standard medium for antimicrobial susceptibility testing of anerobic bacteria, developed this medium which does not require the addition of blood.

Wilkins-Chalgren Anaerobe Agar is recommended for the susceptibility testing of anaerobic bacteria using the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) procedure. It is also recommended for the isolation of anaerobic organisms from clinical specimens. It has shown to function well both in Petri dishes and roll tubes2.

The formulation of Wilkins-Chalgren Anaerobe Agar includes yeast extract to supply vitamins and other growth factors such as purines and pyrimidines that are necessary for good growth of Peptostreptococcus anaerobius and Bacteroides melaninogenicus. Arginine is added to ensure sufficient amino acid is available for the growth of Eubacterium lentum. Pyruvate is present as an energy source for asaccharolytic cocci such as Veillonella. It also acts similarly to catalase and degrades traces of hydrogen peroxide, which may be produced by the action of molecular oxygen on medium constituents and interfere with the metabolism of anaerobes. Haemin is found to be essential for the growth of Bacteroides species and menadione for Bacteroides melaninogenicus.
