Thermo Scientific™ MRS - Pseudomonas isolation agar
Description
Based on pigment formation, selectively isolate and differentiate Pseudomonas spp. using Pseudomonas Isolation Agar (Dehydrated).
Selectively isolate and differentiate Pseudomonas spp. from clinical and non-clinical specimens using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Pseudomonas Isolation Agar (Dehydrated). Pseudomonas Isolation Agar is a modification of the Medium A formulation of King, Ward, and Raney1. Irgasan is added as a potent broad-spectrum antimicrobial. The formulation of this medium was developed to enhance the production of pyocyanin which aids in the presumptive identification of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This medium is especially useful in isolating Pseudomonas from industrial materials such as cosmetics and lotion.
The formulation of this medium was developed to enhance the production of pyocyanin which aids in the presumptive identification of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. P. aeruginosa is the only species of bacteria known to produce pyocyanin, a blue-green pigment which diffuses into the medium surrounding the growth. A low phosphorus concentration in the medium facilitates pyocyanin production.
- Selective media - Irgasan inhibits many gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria other than Pseudomonas spp.
- Enhanced pigment production aids identification
This medium contains gelatin and meat peptones to provide nutrients necessary for bacterial growth. A low phosphorus concentration in the medium facilitates pyocyanin production. The production of pyocyanin is also enhanced by magnesium chloride and potassium sulfate incorporated in the medium and with addition of glycerol to the prepared medium.
