Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Bile Esculin Azide Agar
Description
Selectively isolate and presumptively identify group D Streptococci and Enterococci using Bile Esculin Azide Agar (Dehydrated).
Selectively isolate and presumptively identify group D Streptococci and Enterococci using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Bile Esculin Azide Agar (Dehydrated). Esculin agar containing 40% bile, correlated well with serologically confirmed group D streptococci as reported by Swan1. Isenberg et al. modified the formulation by reducing the concentration of bile and adding the selective agent, sodium azide2.
In the presence of bile, group D Streptococci and Enterococci hydrolyze esculin and form esculetin and dextrose. Ferric ammonium citrate supplies ferric ions which react with esculetin and form brown-black colonies on Bile Esculin Agar.
- Selective solid media - Selective agents like sodium azide and 1% Oxgall inhibit Bacilli and most gram-positive bacteria other than group D Streptococci and Enterococci.
- Easy-to-read – black-brown colonies of group D Streptococci and Enterococci are easy to read.
