It is recommended in the Compendium of Methods for the Microbiological Examination of Foods by the American Public Health Association (APHA) for environmental sampling2.

Neutralize chemical disinfectants to distinguish bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity in environmental sampling procedures using D/E (Dey-Engley) Neutralizing Agar. The medium can neutralize a range of chemicals including mercurial, iodine or chlorine preparations, quaternary ammonium compounds, formaldehyde and glutaraldehyde.

  • Recommended in the Compendium of Methods for the Microbiological Examination of Foods by the American Public Health Association (APHA) for environmental sampling

This medium contains peptone and yeast extract to provide a source of nitrogen, carbon and vitamins. Dextrose provides energy and sodium thiosulfate is incorporated to neutralize chlorine and iodine. Polysorbate 80 neutralizes phenols and formalin. Sodium thioglycolate neutralizes mercurials. Sodium bisulfite neutralizes formaldehyde and glutaraldehyde. Lecithin neutralizes quaternary ammonium compounds. This medium is suitable for environmental sampling where neutralization of the chemical is important to determine its bactericidal activity.
