Cultivate aerobes and anaerobes and carry out sterility testing using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Fluid Thioglycollate Medium (Dehydrated). This general-purpose medium was first described by Brewer in 19401 consisting of a small amount of agar and a reducing substance to initiate the growth of anaerobes2 and for sterility testing. This medium is recommended by the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and the AOAC International (AOAC), the American Public Health Association (APHA) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the Bacteriological Analytical Manual Online3-6.

Cultivate aerobes and anaerobes using Fluid Thioglycollate Medium.

  • Ease of Identification: Resazurin is an oxidation-reduction indicator which turns pink when oxidation is increased.

This medium is used for qualitative procedures. This medium contains casein peptone and cystine that provides nitrogen and carbon compounds, agar that impedes oxygen diffusion, and sodium thioglycollate, which is a reducing agent that maintains a low oxygen tension in anaerobic medium. Yeast extract supplies B-complex vitamins and enhances the growth of microorganisms.
