Semaphorin 5B (SEMA5B) is a gene belonging to the Semaphorin family, which is known for its role as guidance cues in various biological processes. The gene is located on chromosome 3q21.3 and encodes for the transmembrane protein Semaphorin 5B, which participates significantly in neural development and cancer processes. SEMA5B serves as a guidance cue in neural tissues, impacting axonal growth and branching by acting through receptors like PlexinA1. It is proteolytically processed from its transmembrane form to a soluble form, capable of collapsing growth cones in neurons, thereby regulating neuronal pathfinding.
