Life Science Buffers
Balanced salt solutions and powders used for molecular, protein, nucleic acid, and cell biology applications including cell culture, electrophoresis, ELISA, and chromatography processes; available in a variety of formulations and grades.
Buffer solutions serve to keep pH (acidity or alkalinity) nearly constant in a variety of chemical and biological applications. For example, a bicarbonate buffer helps maintain the pH of blood, a buffered saline maintains cellular contents at a consistent pH level, and buffers help maintain a narrow pH range for enzymes to function correctly.
Most biological samples used in research are kept at a pH of about 7.4. Common biological buffers used for tissue culture include Dulbeccos phosphate buffered saline (PBS), Tris base, HEPES, MOPS, PIPES, and other formulations developed for specific cell lines or applications. Most buffers used in cell culture are also DNase-, RNase-, and protease-free.
The choice of buffer for a particular biological reaction or site depends on several factors:
- Temperature
- Desired or target pH
- Buffer toxicity (to the system)
- Buffer interactions with other system components

PIPES Sesquisodium Salt (Piperazine N,N' bis(2 ethanesulfonic acid) sesquisodium salt) is a high-purity reagent provided in a 250G pack. It is commonly used as a buffering agent in biochemical and laboratory applications due to its stability at a wide range of pH levels. PIPES is primarily used in the preparation of buffers for biological assays and research, as it does not interfere with biological systems. The sesquisodium salt form helps maintain the pH in both acidic and basic environments. This reagent is suitable for cell culture, enzyme assays, and other biochemical studies where precise pH control is essential. It is also utilized in electrophoresis, chromatography, and immunological testing.

HEPES sodium salt is a buffering agent used in biochemistry and molecular biology that was selected and described by Good et al It is a zwitterionic piperazinic buffer that is useful for a pH range of 6 8 8 2 HEPES lacks the ability to form a significant complex with most metal ions and is recommended for use as a non-coordinating buffer in solutions with metal ions It is commonly used in cell culture media and as an ampholytic separator to create a pH gradient in isoelectric focusing HEPES interferes with reactions between DNA and restriction enzymes to a lesser extent than similar buffers with less substituted amine groups such as Tris This lack of interference occurs because steric hindrance of the protonated tertiary amine in HEPES shields the negative charge of DNA to a lesser extent than less substituted buffers This buffer is capable of forming radicals and is therefore not suitable for redox reactions It is suitable for use in the bicinchoninic acid (BCA) assay

MOPS (3-(N-Morpholino)propanesulfonic acid sodium salt) is a highly effective biochemical reagent used for pH buffering in a variety of biological, biochemical, and chemical processes. This 2.5 kg container is ideal for high-throughput laboratories that require a stable, consistent pH environment. MOPS is commonly used in experiments related to protein and nucleic acid analysis, enzyme activity assays, and electrophoresis. Its ability to maintain a steady pH of 7.0–7.5 makes it indispensable in cell culture and biological research where pH fluctuations could interfere with sensitive processes. It is also a standard reagent for maintaining pH in buffers for molecular biology applications.

MOPS sodium salt is a buffering agent used in biochemistry and molecular biology that was selected and described by Good et al. It is a zwitterionic, morpholinic buffer that is useful for a pH range of 6.5 – 7.9 and commonly used for cell culture media, as a running buffer in electrophoresis and for protein purification in chromatography. MOPS lacks the ability to form a complex with most metal ions and is recommended for use as a non-coordinating buffer in solutions with metal ions. MOPS is often used in buffered culture media for bacteria, yeast, and mammalian cells. MOPS is regarded as an excellent buffer for use in separating RNA in agarose gels. It is recommended to sterilize MOPS buffers by filtration rather than with autoclave due to the unknown identity of yellow degradation products that occur after sterilization of MOPS with autoclave. It is suitable for use in the bicinchoninic acid (BCA) assay.

Iminodiacetic acid is a metal ion chelator that targets Cr6+, Cd2+, Ni2+, and Pb2+. It selectively and irreversibly binds metal ions through the coordination of carboxyl and imino groups, reducing the toxicity of metal ions and promoting their adsorption and separation. It is used for heavy metal ion removal, coordination complex stabilization, environmental pollution control (e.g., heavy metal adsorption in water), and coordination chemistry (e.g., metal ion detection and separation) research.
