5-Bromo-3-indolyl β-D-galactopyranoside (Bluo-Gal) is a chromogenic substrate for β-galactosidase. Upon enzymatic hydrolysis, it forms an insoluble blue precipitate, enabling specific identification of bacterial β-galactosidases (e.g., *E. coli*'s lacZ gene) at pH 7.4. It is useful for light and electron microscopy, and histochemical detection of reporter gene expression in transgenic organisms for β-galactosidase activity localization.
