This gene encodes alpha tubulin, a key component of microtubules in eukaryotic cells. Microtubules, composed of alpha and beta tubulins, perform essential functions in the cytoskeleton. Tubulin genes are highly conserved and belong to the tubulin superfamily, with alpha, beta, and gamma tubulins present in all eukaryotes. Gamma tubulin is crucial for microtubule assembly nucleation. This alpha-tubulin gene is one of three in a cluster on chromosome 12q and shares similarity with mouse and rat Tuba1 genes. Its expression is mainly found in differentiated neurological cells. Mutations in this gene cause lissencephaly type 3 (LIS3), a neurological disorder with microcephaly, intellectual disability, and early-onset epilepsy due to impaired neuronal migration. Alternative splicing results in multiple isoforms.
