Scissors
Hand-held instruments designed to cut thin materials, such as paper and cloth, consisting of two blades laid one on top of the other; products may be intended for use in specific applications such as cutting tissue or bone, dissections, etc.
Scissors are used in the laboratory to cut various materials. Some are for general use and others are designed specifically for tissue dissection or surgery.
Scissors are hand-operated tools that consist of a pair of metal blades with handles. The blades pivot to bring the sharpened edges in contact with each other, an action that cuts the material placed between the blades.
Scissors are selected based on specific features:
- Size or length: Blade length is key, as is the overall length of the scissors
- Shank-to-blade ratio: The length of the handles compared to the length of the cutting blade; the ratio helps determine the force needed to product a cut
- Type of handles: Straight, offset
- Material: Stainless steel is typically used for surgical scissors; some surgical scissors also have tungsten carbide cutting surfaces for hardness and durability
- Tips: Blade ends may be pointed, semi-blunt, or blunt (rounded)
- Blade shape: Straight, curved, or angled (bent); curved or angled blades may provide better access to areas with limited space

World Precision Instrument Spencer Stitch Scissors, 10.75cm, German
Spencer Stitch Scissors are stitch-cutting scissors or suture scissors for removing sutures or stitches. Spencer Stitch Scissors have a relatively short, straight, and narrow blades. The tips of Spencer stitch scissors are blunt rather than sharp to minimize the risk of accidentally puncturing or damaging underlying tissues while cutting sutures. One blade is notched to provide improved grip and traction when cutting through sutures, preventing slippage and ensuring clean cuts of just the suture. The ring handles give you a firm, comfortable grip for precision control. They come in a variety of lengths, from 9.0 cm to 13.25 cm. Shorter handles typically offer more control, and longer handles give you greater reach. These Spencer Stitch Scissors are manufactured from surgical grade stainless steel or premium German steel, both of which are autoclavable. WPI recommends properly cleaning all your surgical instruments promptly after use.

World Precision Instrument McPherson-Vannas Spring Scissors, 7cm, Straight, 3mm Blades
McPherson-Vannas scissors are a fine pair of surgical scissors commonly used in ophthalmic procedures, specifically for delicate dissection and excision of ocular tissues. They may also be used in ophthalmic surgeries for cataract removal, glaucoma, and corneal transplantation. Other surgical specialties, like neurosurgery, plastic surgery, and ear, nose, and throat (ENT) surgery, may use McPherson-Vannas spring scissors for delicate dissection and cutting of tissues. These scissors have fine, sharp blades that are either curved or straight. These short, fine blades allow for precise cuts of delicate structures. Withe the spring handle, they are designed for excellent control and visibility during surgery, while minimizing trauma to surrounding tissues. The spring handles offer a stable grip for the surgeon, and they can also be used by either left- or right-handed operators.

World Precision Instrument McPherson-Vannas Spring Scissors, 8cm, Curved, 5mm Blades, German
The McPherson-Vannas spring scissors were originally designed by Dr. David McPherson and Dr. Erkki Vannas in the 1970s specifically for microsurgery, which requires precision in the dissection of delicate tissues. The fine, sharp tips of these Vannas spring scissors allow for precise cutting and dissection of small tissues. For greater visibility at the tip, select the curved blades. These surgical scissors have a smooth cutting action for a clean cut with minimal damage to surrounding tissues. The lightweight and ergonomic design of the McPherson-Vannas spring scissors reduces hand fatigue during use. Like all our spring scissors, these Vannas spring scissors are ideal for ambidextrous use and are often preferred by left-handed operators. These scissors are crafted of surgical grade stainless steel or our premium German steel, ensuring their durability. These surgical scissors can be sterilized with a chemical sterilant or by autoclaving.

World Precision Instrument Olsen-Hegar Needle Holder with Suture Scissors, 16.5cm, Serrated, TC Inserts, SS
Olsen-Hegar Needle Holders are a dual purpose surgical instrument, combining the functions of a needle holder and surgical scissors into one instrument. This is ideal for suturing, because you can grasp the needle for stitching and use the integrated scissors for trimming the ends without reaching for a different surgical instrument. Streamline your suturing process and save time. Simultaneously, you can reduce the risk of dropping needles. Designed but the American surgeon Dr. George Olsen and gynecologist Dr. Douglas Hegar, the Olsen-Hegar needle holders are often used in orthopedics, plastic surgery, and any application requiring surturing. Life science researchers doing in vivo animal studies like implanting electrodes would also find this instrument useful. Researchers working with microinjection or microfluidics would also benefit from the dual use of this needle holder/scissors combination.

World Precision Instrument Lister Bandage Scissors, 15 cm, German
Lister Bandage Scissors, also called Lister scissors or Lister dressing scissors, are a pair of surgical scissors named after British surgeon Joseph Lister. They are designed for cutting and removing dressings, bandages, and medical materials without hurting the patient. Lister scissors have blunt and angled tips. The blunt tip prevents accidental injury or puncturing of the patient's skin while cutting close to the body. The angled design lets you easily insert the scissors under bandages. The angled blade also gives you better visibility and improved access to the dressing, especially in tight or confined spaces. The cutting blade is blunt. These surgical scissors are primarily used for removing dressings, bandages, or gauze. This is common in wound care, postoperative care, and first aid. The Lister Bandage Scissors are available in a variety of sizes from 8.75 cm (3.5") to 15 cm (6"). They have a 4 cm cutting edge.
