Controlled Environment Coveralls
Controlled environment (CE) coveralls serve two purposes; they protect the wearer from particulates and help prevent particulates from contaminating controlled environments. They are used throughout processes and material handling in a variety of industries, including but not limited to biotechnology, pharmaceutical, microelectronics, semiconductor, medical devices, aerospace, and automotive. CE coveralls are one-piece outer garments that fit over other clothing, cover the entire body, and are designed to be worn for long durations.
Available in single-use or reusable styles, CE coveralls are made from materials that provide an effective barrier for the wearer while preventing particulate, aerosol, spray, and splash contamination. Single-use or disposable materials are nonwoven fabrics produced using spunlaid techniques from plastic polymers and consist of polypropylene, polyethylene, flashspun fabric, microporous fabric, spunbond meltblown spunbond (SMS), or DuPont™ Tyvek™ fabric. Reusable cleanroom fabrics such as cotton or polycotton can be processed, decontaminated, and worn many times.
The Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology (IEST) has recommended gowning requirements for each ISO class. These requirements should be considered when selecting appropriate CE clothing. Selection criteria for CE coveralls include:
- Sterile or non-sterile requirements
- Attached hood and/or boots requirements
- Closure type: zippers, buttons, snaps, or ties
- Seam construction: serged, stitched, bound, or taped
- Number of pockets
- Electrostatic discharge (ESD) and other resistant properties
- Color
CE coveralls are offered in sizes 2X-small through 7X-large depending on the style. When selecting size, keep in mind that coveralls fit over other clothing.
CE clothing is tested and manufactured in ISO certified facilities under stringent process controls to ensure each product meets strict quality standards and performs to specifications. Regulatory compliance details can be obtained at the individual product level.
