The ADPGK gene encodes ADP-dependent glucokinase, an enzyme distinct from the ATP-dependent hexokinases as it employs adenosine diphosphate (ADP) rather than ATP to phosphorylate glucose to glucose-6-phosphate. This gene, initially identified in archaeal species, has been co-opted into mammalian systems where it plays roles primarily in glycolytic processes. Structurally, the mammalian ADPGK differs from its archaeal counterpart, exemplified by the rearrangement of its secondary structures, such as the alpha2 and alpha3 helices.
