The ADPGK gene encodes ADP-dependent glucokinase, an enzyme distinct from the ATP-dependent hexokinases as it employs adenosine diphosphate (ADP) rather than ATP to phosphorylate glucose to glucose-6-phosphate. This gene, initially identified in archaeal species, has been co-opted into mammalian systems where it plays roles primarily in glycolytic processes.
