Several EF-hand calcium-binding proteins have been identified within the nervous system, which includes calbindin, calretinin, and parvalbumin. These cytosolic calcium-binding proteins modulate and mediate the function of the intracellular second messenger calcium. These proteins are believed to function in the buffering, transport and regulation of calcium. Calbindin, calretinin, and parvalbumin are localized in distinct neuronal subpopulations, and antibodies against these proteins are useful markers for neuranatomical and developmental studies.
