Human CD40 is a member of the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) family of cell surface receptors, and is found on all B cells (except plasma cells) and some epithelial, carcinoma, and lymphoid dendritic cells. Through binding of its ligand (CD40L/CD154/gp39), CD40 plays an important role in B-cell activation and isotype switching.
