The heat shock response was first described for Drosophila salivary gland cells, and morphologically consists of a change in their polytene chromosome puffing patterns that involves de novo synthesis of a few proteins. Similar heat shock proteins were later discovered in bacterial, chicken, and mammalian cells, and were subsequently studied in most organisms. A series of heatshock proteins Hsp 90, Hsp 70, Hsp 20-30 and ubiquitin (8,000 m.w.) are induced by insults such as temperature shock, chemicals and other environmental stress. Hsp 70 levels increase 1000-fold in mammalian and Drosophila cells following induction. This protein concentrates in nuclei during heat shock and returns to the cytoplasm when the shock is removed. The exact function(s) of the Hsp 70 and other heat shock proteins are not known. Mammalian Hsp 72/73 is reported to be structurally and functionally related to a protein that releases clathrin triskelia from coated vesicles; Hsp 72/73 is known to bind ATP without hydrolyzing it.Specifications
