PKR is an interferon-inducible serine/threonine kinase activated by double stranded RNA. The activation of PKR is accompanied by phosphorylation at multiple sites, including Thr446 and Thr451 in the PKR activation loop. PKR phosphorylates theα-subunit of the eukaryotic initiation factor-2 and inhibits protein synthesis. PKR also phosphorylates p53 and plays a role in the interferon response to viral infections.
