Azithromycin dihydrate
Description
Azithromycin dihydrate has anti-immunomodulatory/anti-inflammatory properties, which make it useful in treating cystic fibrosis. It shows an azalide antimicrobial agent active in vitro against various pathogens.
This Thermo Scientific Chemicals brand product was originally part of the Alfa Aesar product portfolio. Some documentation and label information may refer to the legacy brand. The original Alfa Aesar product / item code or SKU reference has not changed as a part of the brand transition to Thermo Scientific Chemicals.
General Description
• Azithromycin dihydrate is the dihydrate form of azithromycin, an azalide derived from erythromycin, that shows antibacterial activity
• Azithromycin dihydrate reversibly binds to the 23S rRNA of the 50S ribosomal subunit of the bacterial ribosome of susceptible microorganisms, inhibiting the translocation step of protein synthesis by preventing the assembly of the 50S ribosomal subunit. This inhibits bacterial protein synthesis and cell growth, causing cell death
Application
• Azithromycin dihydrate shows anti-immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory activities
• It shows antimalarial activity against Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax, which are multidrug-resistant species
• In the laboratory, azithromycin dihydrate has been used in blocking buffer for indirect immunofluorescence
• It has been used in U87 cells for cell viability assay and flow cytometry analysis to study the Zika virus infection in glial cells
• Azithromycin dihydrate has been used in experiments to compare its antibacterial activity with PYRRO-C3D against Streptococcus pneumoniae biofilms
