The C14orf21 gene, also known as SLIRP (SRA stem-loop interacting RNA binding protein), is located on chromosome 14 and encodes a mitochondrial protein involved in RNA processing. SLIRP is crucial for the stabilization and regulation of mitochondrial-encoded RNAs, which play a vital role in mitochondrial gene expression and overall mitochondrial function. The SLIRP protein interacts with RNA stem-loop structures, particularly those involved in the steroid receptor RNA activator (SRA), thereby regulating gene expression by modulating the activity of nuclear receptors.
