Erythroblast membrane-associated protein (ERMAP) is a gene situated on chromosome 1p34.2, encoding a protein primarily associated with erythroblast cells. ERMAP is expressed in erythroid lineage cells and plays a crucial role as an adhesion molecule, involved in the maturation and stability of the erythrocyte membrane. This protein is associated with the Scianna blood group system, and variations within the ERMAP gene lead to different antigenic expressions which are important in transfusion medicine. ERMAP is also significant in mediating cell-cell adhesion processes essential for erythropoiesis, where it facilitates receptor-ligand interactions in hematopoietic stem cells.
