Ethenocytidine, also known as epsilon cytidine, is a modified nucleoside derivative of cytidine, where an etheno bridge forms between the nitrogenous base and the sugar moiety. This structural alteration is best characterized through various spectroscopic methods such as NMR, which reveal distinct differences between its crystalline and solution states. Ethenocytidine is not directly encoded by genes but can be formed post-transcriptionally as a result of exposure to certain mutagenic chemicals. The presence of ethenocytidine can induce mutagenic effects due to its propensity to mispair during DNA replication, which can alter genetic coding and affect gene expression. Understanding these modifications is crucial in the study of carcinogenesis and the design of therapeutic interventions targeting gene transcription processes.
