BGJb is a medium modified by Sylvia Fitton-Jackson from the original BGJ medium developed by Biggers, Gwatkin, and Judah. BGJb medium creates favorable conditions for growth and calcification of fetal bones.
- It is modified as follows: with L-glutamine, phenol red; without HEPES
- Contains higher levels of amino acids and glucose, and an increased buffering capacity to improve conditions for growth and calcification of fetal bone
- BME contains no proteins, lipids, or growth factors and requires supplementation, commonly with 10% Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS).
- Uses sodium bicarbonate buffer system (3.5g/L) and requires 5-10% CO2 environment to maintain physiological pH
