IRF2 regulates the transcription regulation important to cell proliferation as well as immune responses by binding to the upstream regulatory region of type I IFN and IFNinducible MHC class I genes (the interferon consensus sequence (ICS)) and repression of those genes. However, IRF2 also functions as a transcriptional activator of histone H4 by interactions with NF-kappa B.
