IRF-3 is encoded by the IRF-3 gene located on chromosome 19 in humans and belongs to the Interferon regulatory transcription factor (IRF) family. IRF-3 plays a critical role in the response of the immune system to viral infection. It binds to the Interferon stimulated response element (ISRE) of its downstream target genes such as Interferon alpha and beta to activate their transcription which eventually leads to immune modulatory actions of the type I Interferon (IFN) pathway. Following phosphorylation on Serine 396, IRF-3 has been shown to affiliate with CREB binding protein (CREBBP) and translocate to the nucleus which is critical for its ability to bind to DNA and act as a transcription factor. Additionally, phosphorylation associated nuclear translocation may also protect IRF-3 from degradation by the virus machinery.Specifications
