Latexin, also known as LXN, is a carboxypeptidase A inhibitor found in mammals, and it shares structural similarities with cystatin C, suggesting its role in protein abundance regulation. The LXN gene is located on chromosome 3, specifically at 3q25.32, encompassing 5 exons and coding for a protein of 222 amino acids. Latexin is identified as a molecular marker in the developing rat brain and is known for its tumor suppressive activities. With a molecular weight of 29 kDa, LXN is highly expressed in macrophages and plays a significant role in the inflammatory immune response, including regulating macrophage polarity and enhancing tumor immune surveillance. Research involving a Lxn knockout mouse model has demonstrated its importance in the regulation of hematopoietic stem cell function, suggesting its involvement in cellular homeostasis and survival mechanisms.
